Leo Yazzie (Navajo)Leo Yazzie (Navajo) was born and raised at Black Mesa, Arizona and is now living in Flagstaff, Arizona with his wife, Carolyn. His interest in jewelry-making began while he was taking metal-smithing classes as electives during his sociology studies at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. For twenty-six years, he has been a professional jewelry-maker in a family group that include his cousins, Lee Yazzie. and Ray Yazzie His designs are heavily influenced by the Navajo traditional culture and its teachings, including the Navajo religion. His mother and grandmother were weavers and their storm pattern rugs influenced his jewelry designs. He often incorporates textile design elements into his earrings, bracelets, pendants and rings. Working in gold and silver, often combining the two metals, he favors turquoise, red and pink coral, sugilite, lapis and opal to add color to his pieces. Leo will use inlay in some of his work to showcase stone quality and color. In his years as a professional jewelry-maker, Leo has garnered many awards and received recognition among collectors and peers. Elk Ridge Art is especially pleased to showcase Leo
