Deborah Silversmith (Navajo)

Debbie Silversmith is Kenneth Begay’s granddaughter (Harvey Begay’s niece). Kenneth Begay has been heralded as the most famous Navajo jeweler of the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. His legacy remains as a teacher and leader among Navajo silversmiths during that era. He was noted for introducing a new style that led away from the massive jewelry of that time and was given the title of “The Father of Modern Navajo Jewelry.” Kenneth Begay passed away in 1977. His granddaughter, Deborah Silversmith, was fortunate enough to have been taught silversmithing by him. As a result of her close relationship with him, she inherited her grandfather’s jewelry-making instruments.

Debbie continues to honor her grandfather’s memory with designs of her own which show the influence of her grandfather. These days, in addition to making jewelry, she tries to “give back” by teaching silversmithing to Navajo children in her community.
