Elizabeth Abeyta (Navajo)Elizabeth Abeyta is a very well-known artist in the Native American art world and is celebrated for her work with lava rock and clay to create exquisite sculptures. Ms. Abeyta is primarily known for her koshare clowns, mudheads and other Native American figures. She comes from a family of talented artists. Her mother, a weaver and potter, her father, a famous painter, Narcisco Abeyta and her brother, a celebrated comtemporary painter, Tony Abeyta. Elizabeth has had exhibits at several museums including the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona. She has won such honors as top awards from the Navajo Craftsman Exhibition at the Museum of Northern Arizona, Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonies and Santa Fe’s Indian Market. Her work was included in Jerry and Lois Jacka’s award-winning Beyond Tradition and in 1988 had a piece named “Best Artistic Investment” by The Indian Trader. In the June, 1990 issue of Southwest Art Magazine, Ms. Abeyta was honored with a five page story regarding her life and her art.
