This is the first winged bear created by Gene Tobey in bronze and stainless steel, a metal combination seldom found in sculpture. The bear was named for the legend of the flight of the Phoneix - what if a man were to dress up in a bear suit and fly like the Phoenix? Gene Tobey is once again exploring the relationship between man and the animal world - and transformation. Transformation of the shaman into animal form is a cornerstone of Native beliefs. The wings on the bear represent night-flying creatures.. The hand on the bear's chest represents man's signature, the aboriginal signature of the first artists.
